Cholesterol is an essential substance that the body produces, but which people also consume in foods. Cholesterol is almost present in every body cell with important natural functions of digesting foods, production of hormones, and generate vitamin. Cholesterol is both good and bad. Low-density lipoproteins (LDL)  is what is referred to us as “bad” cholesterol while high-density lipoproteins (HDL) is referred to us as “good” cholesterol. At normal levels, it is an essential substance for the body. However, if concentrations in the blood get too high, it becomes a silent danger that puts people at risk of heart attack, coronary heart disease, and diabetes and atherosclerosis diseases. In this article we are going to look at the leading causes of high cholesterol in our bodies that can lead to what is called life style diseases.

Good and bad lifestyle is the key to your health outcome. Unhealthy behaviors are the main culprits behind high body cholesterol level. An unhealthy lifestyle such as excess tobacco smoking and excess alcohol drinking makes your body elevate production of LDL “bad” cholesterol than it needs. The result of production of high LDL cholesterol lead to high risk of heart and arterial disease.

High body cholesterol can be as a result of hereditary gene. The condition of hereditary gene that result to rise levels of cholesterol in the blood is called familial hypercholesterolemia. Some people inherit genes from their mother, father or even grandparents that cause them to have too much cholesterol. The severity of FH result to the concentration and degree of LDL cholesterol in the blood. FH is dangerous because it can cause premature rise in all the underling diseases that arises as a result of elevation of LDL such as atherosclerotic and heart disease.

3. Dietary Cholesterol foods

Research has shown that dietary cholesterol does not significantly impact cholesterol levels in your body. However, a small number of people are considered as cholesterol non-compensators or hyper-responders and appear to be more vulnerable to high-cholesterol. There are healthy high-cholesterol foods and unhealthy high cholesterol food. It’s up to you to choose any diet that you wish but keep in mind that not all cholesterol-containing foods are healthy and can result to the underlining disease if you don’t take precaution.

4. Lack of exercise and body physical activities

Physical activities make your body organs active which result in burning any excess “bad” cholesterol. Exercise helps boost your body’s HDL, or “good,” cholesterol while increasing the size of the particles that make up your LDL, or “bad,” cholesterol, which makes it less harmful. Exercises such swimming, jogging cycling and gym is of great value in reduction of “bad” cholesterol and keep your body fit and healthy.

5. Age.

We all life in a world that at one time we shall be in an old age or we are already there. Because your body’s chemistry changes as you age, your risk of high cholesterol increase. For instance, as you age, your liver becomes less capable to remove LDL cholesterol. In old age you should take precaution in ensuring you don’t end in compromising situation that may increase cholesterol level such tobacco smoking and excess alcohol intake.
