What is pregnancy test?
A pregnancy test is used to determine whether a woman is pregnant or not. This is done by analyzing a sample of a woman’s urine or blood for the presence of human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) hormone. hCG hormone is produced by the placenta shortly after egg implantation on to the uterus and is usually only present in a woman’s body when she is pregnant. Any woman who want to rule out whether she is pregnant or not should perform this test. A pregnancy test can also be performed by health professional in eliminating suspicion of suspected pregnancy in patients, or before using clinical services which may interfere with a pregnancy e.g. in prescription medicine of contraceptive method in a patient in effort of family planning program-me .
What are the benefits of pregnancy testing?
Pregnancy testing has many benefits to women who are conducting it, because it helps one develop earlier diagnosis of pregnancy in the privacy of one’s home. Early diagnosis enables early preventative interventions to ensure the health of the woman during the pregnancy period and the safety of her developing child. Early diagnosis is also beneficial for women who do not wish to proceed with their pregnancy, where such pregnancies can be of medical significance such as ectopic pregnancy. This enables termination of the pregnancy in the early stages mostly during first trimester and therefore reduces the complexity and increases the safety of the termination procedure as well as the safety of the mother.
What’s the difference between pregnancy tests that check urine and those that test blood?
There are two types of pregnancy tests. One tests the blood for the pregnancy hormone, hCG. The other checks the urine for this hormone. You can do a urine test at home with a home pregnancy test kit but for the blood test you need to see a your doctor who can initiate the blood tests.
A.Home pregnancy test (HPT)
In these modern days, most women first use home pregnancy tests kit (HPT) which are mostly the best early pregnancy test before missed period to find out if they are pregnant. HPTs are inexpensive, private, and easy to use at comfort of your home. HPTs kit detect hCG in urine and will be able to tell if you’re pregnant about 2 weeks after ovulation. Some more sensitive urine tests can tell if you are pregnant as early as 5 day before missed period. If a HPT kit detect that you are pregnant, you should see your doctor right away. You doctor can use a more sensitive test along with a pelvic exam to tell for sure if you’re pregnant. Seeing your doctor early on in your pregnancy will help you and your baby stay healthy.
B.Blood pregnancy test
Blood tests can pick up hCG earlier in a pregnancy than urine tests and can tell if you are pregnant about 6 to 8 days after you ovulate (or release an egg from an ovary). Doctors uses two types of blood tests to check and detect hCG .
1. A quantitative hCG blood test
A quantitative blood test(or the beta hCG test) measures the exact amount of hCG in your blood. So it can find even tiny amounts of hCG. This makes it very accurate.
2. Qualitative hCG blood test
Qualitative hCG blood tests just check to see if the pregnancy hormone is present or not. So it gives a yes or no answer. The qualitative hCG blood test is about as accurate as a urine test.
